To test the blender arm, we make the Good Food frozen super berry smoothie and follow Barney Desmazery's how to make mayonnaise guide. The lowest speed setting tackles both recipes without issue, but the blitz button is also satisfying to use on those large frozen chunks of fruit.

Often, whisk attachments on hand blender sets are flimsy, but thankfully you get what you pay for with this set. We whip cream to stiff peaks in the Tritan jug.

Then comes the chopper. We finely dice three halved onions in 30 seconds, but the 500ml capacity could also handle much more. Thanks to the fine holes and sturdy plastic blades of the masher attachment, the resulting mashed potato is fluffy and smooth.

What we like about the Smeg HBF02 hand blender

The 50s theme spans across the design of the accessories, which are unapologetically retro. The largest is the 500ml chopper, a rounded bowl complete with an extremely sharp, sprung blade.

All its stainless steel blades are super-sharp, and make light work of tough ingredients. The added FlowBlend technology is designed to minimise vacuum suction when blending thicker recipes like frozen smoothies, and seems to make a real impact against thick mixes.

This may also be due in part to the broader jug capacity. The vessel in which you blend is another unique boast. Rather than the standard beaker, it’s a 1.7-litre jug complete with pouring spout, handle and removable lid, much like you’d see on a full-sized retro milkshake blender. You can use it to prepare smoothies, soups and sauces, which you can then store in the fridge ready for pouring – a practical touch.

There are five speed options that are adjustable by spinning the top left or right. This can be done one-handed thanks to the anti-slip handle. A turbo button offers an added boost, should you need it for stubborn chunks.

Should you buy the Smeg HBF02 hand blender set?

If you have the money to spend, this is an investment purchase that will negate any need to buy separate appliances like bullet blenders or hand mixers. In that way, it's a truly efficient buy that's space-saving, full of power and built to last. A Smeg food processor attachment (£137.51) is also available and compatible for the HBF02 hand blender.
