Russell Hobbs Buckingham digital microwave

Pros: easy-to-use, compact, great value
Cons: few pre-sets, low wattage

Star rating: 4/5

This fairly basic, great-value microwave wins points by having a few nifty extra functions, and for above-average cooking prowess. Compact (but surprisingly heavy – bring a friend when unpacking), full power is only 700W, but that’s enough for most of your basic microwaving needs.

The eight auto-cooking presets include settings for reheating pizza, cooking spaghetti and baking a potato, which it does with aplomb, producing a fluffy, moist interior that’s cooked all the way through.

Instructions are very clear and detailed, meaning those extra functions, including a child lock and quick start functions, are easy-to-use. There are no recipes included, but a tips page is a useful addition.

The defrost function handles chicken well, defrosting evenly without leaving a piece of breast half cooked and half still frozen as so often happens, and it's easy to clean – just remember to regularly clean the mica wave-guide cover inside, as it’s non-removable. A pull handle is also a welcome addition – when your hands are full, it’s easier to use than a push button.

If you're looking for a reliable, sturdy, basic microwave without the bells and whistles, which you can set up and start cooking with in no time, this is a great option.
